Map from Michigan Dept. of Transportation
Pseudonymous High School Teacher (I call her Pshaw) has been running Travel Tip Thursdays, and I finally decided to join in with my beloved home state. Before I start, I probably should tell you a few things about my state.
- With about 10 million people, we are the eighth most populous state in the union.
- About 4 million of those people are in section number 9 of the map, where Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties are.
- We are the only state made entirely of two peninsulas.
- The coastline of Lake Michigan (on the west side of the state, between Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin) is longer than the coast of the entire Easter Seaboard.
-
People who live in the Upper peninsula call themselves Yoopers, and call the rest of us trolls (we live below the bridge).
-
Minnesota calls itself the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Michigan has over 11,000, plus, you know, those big ones.
-
Michiganders tend to be a little proprietary about "those big ones."
-
Anywhere north of sections 7, 8, and 9 on the map is considered "Up North." It's where the rest of us go for vacations and weekends away.
Next week, I'll take you to the first of my favorite Michigan cities, Saugatuck, and we'll discuss the whole east side/west side dichotomy of the lower peninsula.
